Background

ONISHI Takuya was born in Tokyo in 1975. He spent approximately 113 days in space as a Flight Engineer aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Expeditions 48 and 49 in 2016. In 2025, he spent approximately 146 days aboard the ISS as part of Expeditions 72 and 73 of the Crew-10 mission, and became the third Japanese astronaut to serve as ISS Commander. During his stay, he contributed to the advancement of human spaceflight by conducting various experiments and technology demonstrations in the Kibo module, improving the ISS communication infrastructure, and engaging in public outreach activities.

Completed all basic training requirements, and certified as an ISS astronaut.

October, 2011

Participated in the 15th NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) mission.

November, 2013

Assigned as a crewmember for the ISS Expeditions 48 and 49.

July-October, 2016

Spent roughly 113 days in space as a flight engineer aboard the ISS as part of Expeditions 48 and 49. Maneuvered the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) and became the first Japanese astronaut to capture the Cygnus spacecraft in space. In addition to constructing a new experimental environment aboard Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module of the ISS, conducted many experiments for both JAXA and international partners.

Boarded the Crew Dragon Spacecraft (Crew-10) and worked on the ISS as a long-duration crew member of Expeditions 72 and 73. In April 2025, became the third Japanese astronaut to serve as ISS Commander.
